We became members of the Tucson Zoo March 31. This is the first annual membership we have bought for the girls. They were so happy to see the animals and so cute telling us about their day. Elnorra said she would help "take care of [her] sister in case she saw any scary animals, like a tiger." They were also very excited to feed the giraffe! Windy, DD, and the girls had a great day and went shopping too. Too bad I had to work. -Ben. Elnorra told me all about it when I got home. Especially about the giraffe which grabbed his food with his really long tongue.

She was even singing her own quite version of the ABC song...
So cute, and she does hear it a lot from her older sister.
Her favorite song is "The Wheels on the Bus" as no matter how loud she is crying and for how long, that song always calms her down (at least while we are singing....) She also knows several of the hand motions that go with the song.

Mischief and trouble...
Elnorra went down for her quiet time quite nicely, except that she didn't really go down, in fact she woke up her sister and took her out of the crib and started playing with her.
Dilly was outside playing and decided that a cactus looked like a nice thing to touch. She's already woken up several times in the night to voice her discomfort.
I have used tweezers and scotch tape, and I'm sure I've improved the situation, but I just read a medical journal online (http://dermatology.cdlib.org/DOJvol7num2/unknown/cholla/cholla2.html) that says that tape can make the situation worse by only breaking off the top, not removing the barb. This article recommends removing the tiny cacti spines is to first use tweezers and then use Elmer's glue, let dry completely and then peel off. Now that's a good idea, but just how am I going to keep a 19 month old still long enough for the stuff to dry? Sneak up on her while she's sleeping and wake up to find it in her hair an everywhere else she's flopped! Trust me she moves a lot when sleeping.

Dilly's finally talking. She's been babbling for a long time and has used her favorite syllable "that" as her all purpose word/sound for many months. Today she finally repeated after me: say momma "mommy" then say daddy "ba-ba". Ah ha! The light of comprehension has been lit. Or she's just willing to lower her intellectual standards to finally humor her parents. Within the last week she's been saying Mommy, Ba-Ba/Da-da/Daddy as well as "owwie", dog and cat, but refused to repeat to let us know she's really comprehending and deliberately saying things. With her hand in a splint I though I even heard her her say "owwie mommy" ...
I'm excited that mommy is the first "official repeat after me word" as Elnorra took over a year of talking before she said "mom" in any variety!

1-2-3-4-5-8-11
Learning to count. Elnorra has a lot of fun singing numbers, she has 1 to 5 down and then skips to 8 and then goes to 11. Repeating 8-11 as her favorite combination. She also throws in an occasional 82.
She's almost grown out of saying eleven-teen. But it's so cute I have to mention that it was a common occurrence for a couple of months.

The vicissitudes of life
First trip to the Urgent Care
Our first medical trauma. Friday night, seemingly without any cause Cordelia started crying and holding her wrist. When she still seemed to be in real pain after dinner and a snuggle with mama we figured that she was probably hurt badly enough to warrant a trip to the urgent care. We took her and they thought it was probably a fractured wrist! Well, we have been keeping it in this splint and icing it often. She has had some bad swelling and pain but now, two weeks later, it is beginning to seem comfortable again. Her pediatrician said that he cannot confirm an actual fracture, which is good news I suppose but now we are just playing it by ear and trying to encourage her to go easy on it. Here is a picture of her napping (the only time lately she can hold still) with her splint.

Glass-Glasses
Dilly does not yet have any words, but really understands a lot of what is going on. Today Grandee wanted to know if she liked the new drinking glasses she bought. She asked Dilly about the glass and Dilly immediately pointed to Grandee's reading glasses. Well at least she's making a connection. This reminds of the time when Elnorra brought me a straw when I was talking about STRAWberries.

Mexico "over-the-border" trip with Uncle Joe. forgot our passports, even though we have them and there has been such media attention about needeing them to walk across the border now. Fortunatly they let us back in anyway. Now I carry them with me just in case. (Living just a 45 minute drive north of the border it's actually probable that we will "just happen" to go.)
